So we had a full day to tour around Rome, and there was a lot left to see. We started our day at the colosseum, we got there before opening time and there were already lines and so many people around! We bought our tickets with a tour, so we had an hour before it started to grad a bite for breakfast. The kids really enjoyed the colosseum and they learnt a lot about it from the tour guide. I loved it, and can only imagine what it was like back in the day. Something that we all learnt was that over the years people have actually lived in the colosseum. I had no idea.
It was already getting hot! We decided to not walk through the ruins beside the colosseum, there were a lot of people headed that way and we wanted to see some other things as well.
We ended up getting a great view from above them anyway! Next on our list of things we must see was the Pantheon. We walked there from the alter of the fatherland (where the above pictures were taken).
We really enjoyed finding the fountains that we could fill our water bottles in along the way! I had forgotten the whole in the ceiling of the pantheon, it really catches your eye when you go in! Next we (by this I mean I) really wanted to see the Vatican, so we headed towards the river.
Castle saint angelo in the background.

There it is, the country inside a city.

It is really impossible walking up to the Vatican. Truly awe inspiring. We were hot and tired by the time we got there, but I must say it was worth it. We had to walk back across the river to catch the hop on hop off bus to take home. The last thing we had to do was get photos of the colosseum at night. Lillian and I walked down and saw the lovely sight, bonus there was a full moon!

We really had a great time in Rome, but next time I wouldn't go in July, it is just too hot. Oliver was very disappointed with the amount of trash in the city, and I have to agree. It is a city that is full of surprises, ancient, old, and new all side by side, you turn around and spot something different.
Tomorrow we make our way to Bologna for our last night in Italy.
